My research interests lie at the intersection of health policy and health law, including in the areas of substance use disorder treatment, informed consent, and innovation dissemination. Ongoing projects include the following topics: development of educational videos and a mobile health application for students with substance use disorders at Indiana University-Bloomington; assessing efficacy of multimedia and telemedicine informed consent processes for orthopedic surgery; exploring barriers to medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, including regulatory, institutional, and cultural barriers; and developing potential governmental and institutional policies for facilitating use of evidence-based prevention and treatment for substance use disorders. If you are interested in collaborating with me on these projects, please do not hesitate to contact me.

I am also in the process of writing a book called Opioid Naïve: America’s Addiction to Failing Treatment, forthcoming from Johns Hopkins University Press in 2019. As part of the research for this book, I am conducting a series of interviews with individuals in recovery, family members of individuals in recovery, health practitioners, criminal justice administrators, and policy makers about their perspectives on treatment for opioid use disorder in the U.S. Thus far, I have conducted over 60 in-depth confidential interviews (with IRB approval from Indiana University and the University of Central Florida). If you are interested in confidentially sharing your experience with me, please contact me and I can give you more information about the interview process.
